A plane full of people trying to fly from Washington DC to China spent part of their weekend in Winnipeg.
The plane had engine trouble and made an emergency landing Saturday.
Airports authority president Barry Rempel tells 680 CJOB the mostly Chinese passengers quickly found ways to pass the time in the city.
“On tours, out to Assiniboine Park to look at the Journey to Churchill, some went over to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. We just had some great stories of some incredible Winnipeg ambassadors that stepped up when they realized who these people were.”
The landing also led to a bizarre reunion for a Chinese couple. Rempel says two passengers ran into old friends by chance.
“They were from China, they had gone to university with a couple that they bumped into on the street here in Winnipeg some 20 years ago. They reconnected, just had a great party together. I actually saw them waving each other off at the airport yesterday.”
Air China flew in another aircraft yesterday to take the 300 passengers on to Beijing.
