WINNIPEG – A former Liberal senator from Manitoba has died.
Rod Zimmer passed away this morning at the age of 73.
Zimmer represented Manitoba in the upper chamber from 2005 to 2013.
In 2011 he made headlines when he married Maygan Sensenberger, a 22-year-old aspiring actress. The next year the couple was involved in an incident on an airplane. Sensenberger wound up pleading guilty to causing a disturbance.
Then, last year, Zimmer was found to have owed $176,000 in improperly claimed expenses in a review done by the auditor general.
He was also a known sports enthusiast and served on the board of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
He was sick a number of times over the years including a recent bout with pneumonia. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2003.
