WINNIPEG – A Winnipeg soccer complex has officially been re-named after Manitoba’s “Father of Modern Soccer”.
The Waverley Soccer Complex will now be known as the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.
The 87-year-old is credited for changing Winnipeg’s soccer landscape and inspiring players for decades. In the late eighties, the Italian native founded the Winnipeg Fury – the province’s first professional soccer club. In 1992, the team captured the Canadian Soccer League title.
Canfafio says he’s very honored to recieve this recognition.
“And incredibly humbled that the soccer community has acklowledged me in this way. I’m happy that I contributed to this community I love so much.”
This isn’t the first time Cantafio has been recognized for his contribution to soccer, in 2004 he was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.
