WINNIPEG – We’re learning more about a high speed police pursuit that saw an alleged drunk driver hit high speeds.
Winnipeg Police say they tried to stop a suspected stolen Ford Raptor truck at St. Mary’s Road and Warde Avenue in South St. Vital around 5:30 this morning.
The 20-year-old man behind the wheel allegedly took off, heading west around the Perimeter and turning off onto McGillivray Boulevard.
Police say they used spike belts to try and stop him but he kept going even with flat tires.
He allegedly swerved into oncoming traffic, even hitting another car before ending up in a ditch at McGillivray and Kenaston Boulevards.
The fact no one was hurt was lucky.
Constable Jason Michalyshen 680 CJOB how fast the suspect drove and how far the chase went.
“Speeds reached, you know, upwards of 170 km/h and roughly 30 kilometers, which is significant,” said Michalyshen.
The driver is now facing a long list of charges including impaired driving, dangerous operation of motor vehicle, theft and flight from police.
