In an effort to fight “Islamophobia,” is this ad attacking Caucasians?
Before the attack in Orlando, the City of Toronto and the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants (OCASI) joined forces to launch a campaign against “Islamophobia.”
The poster shows a white man confronting a black Muslim woman in hijab, telling her: “Go back to where you come from,” to which the woman replies, “Where, North York?” (North York is a city in the Greater Toronto Area.)
Today, as the ad is on display, many are calling it out for its racism, saying it depicts all white men as racists. For instance, respected journalist, Tarek Fatah wrote in his Sun story today, “… this perpetuates the victimhood of Muslims, a goal of all Islamists worldwide who hate the West.” Fatah goes on to write, “Bring it down, [Mayor] John Tory, because you are a good man.”
Do you agree with Fatah? Do you think this poster is an insult to all the white men who have fought for equal rights for all? Or do you think this is a a good campaign to combat Islamophobia? OR, is this ad controversial perhaps in an effort just to get people talking?
