Officials at the University of Manitoba have agreed to a new sexual assault policy for the campus.
This comes after a number of incidents on other Canadian campuses in recent years.
U of M legal counsel Maria Versace said the new policy will be monitored closely in the coming years.
“It’s a difficult topic and so we will always have to keep on reviewing it and assessing it to make sure that it is a good policy and something that does address the concerns of our community,” said Versace.
Some of the highlights of the new policy include guidance for dealing with a report of a sexual assault, providing a supportive response, and recognizing the victim is the final decision maker about his or her own interests.
The policy will be explained to students at fall orientation sessions. It will also be available online.
