WINNIPEG – A Brandon woman is charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life to her elderly mother.
Brandon police say the woman allegedly stopped her sick mother’s medical care, seeking alternative forms of therapy.
Concerned family members called police and they intervened. The woman was taken to hospital, but passed away.
Sgt. Bill Brown says police have the authority to make sure people are being cared for by the person charged with making medical decisions for them.
“When a concern like that is raised by a family member, and it happens on a semi-regular basis, it’s our duty to determine that that person is actually caring for themselves or the person in charge of them is providing them with the proper care,” he said.
Police forwarded the results of their investigation to Crown prosecutors, who determined the 58-year-old daughter could be charged.
