Over three thousand Winnipeggers gathered at Shaw Park this morning to kick off the Canada Day long weekend.
Those in attendance put on red and white t-shirts before assembling on the left-field grass to form a human Canadian flag.
Winnipeg has now participated in the annual event for the sixth year in a row. The city won the largest flag award last year, beating out other major Canadian cities including Calgary and Ottawa.
Ron Ramsden was the first in line at the ballpark this morning around 7:00 AM. He said he hopes Winnipeg can repeat as the winner again this year.
“Hopefully we can do it today,” Ramsden said. “We’re going against Regina, Calgary, Brandon, Edmonton. All the best for Canada and I hope we can do well.”
No word yet on which city took the title in 2016.
Meanwhile, organizer Grant Nazaro hinted that the event could be staged at Portage & Main next year.
