The neighbourhood of Transcona has lost an important member of their community.
Paul Martin, otherwise known as the “Greatest Transconian,” passed away yesterday at the age of 96.
Martin dedicated his life to public service. He served as a Transcona school trustee, city councillor and mayor. The World War II veteran also founded the Transcona Historical Museum.
“He always said I’m not one to sit back and let others do the work,” Martin’s son Peter said of his father. “Get involved. If you want to make a difference, if you want something to happen, do it.”
Martin’s neighbours named him after the community in 2005. A street is also named after him in Transcona.
Peter Martin added that he expects a large gathering for the funeral next Tuesday.
