Winnipeg – WHA Jet fans, mark down these dates on your calendar. The evening of Wednesday, October 19th and the afternoon of Thursday, October 20th.
That is when the first 3 members of the Winnipeg Jets just announced Hall of Fame will be honored, and then officially inducted.
The WHA Winnipeg Jets Hot Line of Bobby Hull, Andres Hedberg, and Ulf Nilsson only played together as a unit for four years from 1974-78. But they were arguably the best trio ever in the history of hockey.
Hull played all 411 of his games in the World Hockey Association with the Jets and scored 303 goals and added 335 assists for 638 points following a Hall Of Fame career with the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks. “The Golden Jet” was named the WHA’s MVP in 1973 and ’75.
Nilsson averaged an astounding 121 points per season in his four years in Winnipeg (140-344-484 in 300 GP) and was named the Playoff MVP in 1976.
Hedberg, the 1975 WHA Rookie Of The Year, topped the century mark in all four of his seasons and with 236 goals and 222 assists for 458 points in 286 games.
The Jets have created the hockey club’s long overdue Hall of Fame as a way to showcase the impact and achievements of the players who have become household names while contributing to Winnipeg’s splendid hockey history.
“Given the Hot Line’s enormous accomplishments and what they did to put Winnipeg on the international hockey map, it is an obvious choice to honour Anders, Bobby, and Ulf for our first induction ceremony,” says Mark Chipman, governor of the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club in a team news release. “The Hot Line’s contributions showcased Winnipeg as an exciting hockey market and paved the way for other great players to come to our city including Dale Hawerchuk and Teemu Selanne.”
Hull, Hedberg, and Nilsson will be honored at the Wednesday, October 19th game vs Toronto at MTS Centre and will be officially inducted at a luncheon the following day on Thursday, October 20th at the Fairmont Hotel. Tickets will be 72 dollars each and will be going on sale in early August.
And of course, all three will be on hand for the Heritage Alumni Classic set for Saturday, October 22nd at Investors Group Field.
