BATON ROUGE, LA – Three police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana have been killed and three have been injured in a shooting Sunday morning.
A sheriff’s spokesperson said the shooting started just before 9 a.m. at a convenience store less than 2 kilometres away from police headquarters.
A suspect was killed during the firefight with officers. Police used a robot to check the body for explosives.
Louisiana state police Col. Mike Edmonson said he believes there as a single shooter who has been killed. However, two people had been detained near Baton Rouge. Police are calling them ‘presons of interests.’
Relations with police have been tense following the killing of Alton Sterling, 37, a black man killed by white officers earlier this morning. His death was captured on cellphone video.
President Barack Obama said there was no justification for violence against law enforcement.
“There attacks are the work of cowards who speak for no one,” Obama said. “They right no wrongs. They advance no causes.”
