WARROAD, MN – Getting held up at the border is no fun for anyone.
You want to get on your way, and border guards would rather not keep you long either.
There are plenty of things you can do to prepare for your border crossing.
Brian King with US Customs and Border Protection says it may seem obvious, but you have to put your phone away.
“If you want to have issues or you want to upset a CBP officer, be on your phone or have your phone out. Just put everything away. There’s no reason you can’t be not on your cellphone for that 1-2 minutes.”
Another way to keep the line moving is to leave your oranges at home.
“The United States doesn’t allow any citrus fruit in. I see a lot of people get very upset when we have to take food away and I don’t want to have to take food away.”
King also recommends having all your documents ready and if you have someone else’s kids with you, make sure you have a detailed note from their parents along with contact info.
“Put the vehicle in park, roll down all the windows, have everyone have their sunglasses off. We’re going to visually identify who’s in that vehicle in comparison to the document you provide us.”
