WINNIPEG – Overtime hours are eating away at the City’s budget and it’s hitting Winnipeg Transit particularly hard.
There’s so much work to be done that some mechanics have doubled their salary due to the huge amount of overtime.
John Callahan, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union tells 680 CJOB our salaries aren’t competitve enough to keep mechanics, even though we’re training plenty of them.
“We’ve had numerous times where we’ve had the top apprentice in the province,” says Callahan. “This is what haunts us… we make excellent mechanics but we aren’t always able to retain them.”
Callahan says on top of the labour shortage, transit facilities need to be expanded to meet the demands of a growing bus fleet.
