FARGO, ND – If you’ve been shopping in Fargo, you’ve likely seen the Roger Maris Museum at West Acres Mall.
Mall officials multiple crucial artifacts have been stolen from the display honouring the New York Yankee who broke Babe Ruth’s home run record in 1961.
The S. Rae Hickok Belt, which Maris was given that year, was stolen out of the case in the middle of the night.
The belt was awarded to the top professional US athlete of the year.
The mall also says his 1960 MVP plaque was also stolen.
“We looked at the footage, it was all within two minutes,” explains West Acres property manager Chris Headon. “The perpetrator got in and out so fast that by the time our security arrived, they were already gone.”
No arrests have been made, but the security footage has been turned over to police.
Fargo was Maris’s hometown. The museum opened in his honour in 1984, a year before Maris’ death.
At Maris’ request, it was put where people will see it and is free of charge.
