WINNIPEG – A 29-year-old man has been arrested and charged with assault after he spat on a Winnipeg bus driver, which was caught on camera.
The altercation happened Wednesday around 4:30 p.m. near Polo Park Shopping Mall.
A man got onto the bus and started arguing with the driver about the fare, police said.
That’s when the passenger spit on the bus driver and took off. The driver chased after him and the two men got into a fist fight, which was captured on video.
Jeri Stern was on the bus and shot the video on his phone. “I’m amazed that it was right after I hit record, that happened. I had no idea that was going to come to that point and that kind of escalation. And could not have imagined that would happen next,” Stern tells 680 CJOB.
Transit union boss John Callahan says this type of thing is all too common.
“The spiting is probably the number one assault against bus operators. Operators have told me themselves they would rather be punched or slapped than spat on. In this case, this operator, unfortunately, just saw red.”
Callahan there were roughly 60 assaults on drivers last year, many of them involved spitting.
The transit driver is not facing any charges, police said.
The passenger remains in custody.
