WINNIPEG – A lot of people are wondering how safe amusement park rides really are in the wake of two tragic accidents at theme parks in the US.
A young boy in Kansas was killed after falling off the world’s tallest waterslide.
A few days later, a ferris wheel accident hospitalized three teenaged girls in Tennessee.
Local midway operator, Wonder Shows’ Ken Kiernicki tells 680 CJOB his rides – which are not permanent, but travel around Manitoba – undergo a lot of documented testing and inspections.
“Once we set up the rides in the spring, the fire commissioner’s office comes and inspects the rides. It’s all about safety.”
He adds the rides are also inspected twice before they’re used every day.
“Our ride supervisors will inspect the rides before the rides are in operation every morning. The ride operators will have a checklist and will also check that ride.”
Kiernicki says they spend the winter doing maintenance on all their rides.
