TORONTO – Matt Nichols continued to impress Bomber fans Friday night as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Toronto Argonauts 34-17.
The Argos opened the scoring in the first quarter when former Blue Bomber kicker Lirim Hajrullahu completed a 32-yard field goal.
Minutes later the Bombers responded when kicker Justin Medlock made a 49-yard field goal to tie the game 3-3.
The Bombers first touchdown of the game came with 7:21 left in the second quarter. The Argos had a 10-6 lead before Matt Nichols threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Clarence Denmark, starting in his second straight game after being picked up due to a slew of recent Bomber injuries.
Midway through the second quarter, Andrew Harris capped off a 90-yard Bomber drive with a short run to give the Bombers a 20-10 lead.
It was no turning back for the Blue Bombers in the fourth quarter. On the second play of the 4th, Matt Nichols threw a 79-yard touchdown bomb to Clarence Denmark.
The Bombers would continue to pour it on in the final frame, even chasing out Toronto starting quarterback Logan Kilgore and forcing the Argonauts to put in backup Cody Fajardo.
Kilgore finished the game with five interceptions while Matt Nichols continued his efficient play, completing 17 of his 28 passes for 246 yards. The main star of the game was receiver Clarence Denmark, who finished the game with seven receptions for 195 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Bombers go into the bye week with a 4-4 record. Next up they will travel to Montréal to take on the Alouettes on August 26 at 6:00 p.m.
