Now may be the time to let your bets ride on Uber …
Aviva Canada Inc. has created the first insurance plan for the growing taxi competitor. Securing an insurer has been one of the biggest challenges facing Uber.
Most of its drivers have only personal insurance, which doesn’t cover transporting passengers in exchange for money. Aviva would add an “endorsement” to the driver’s personal policy. This premium cold cost as little as $600 a year, in addition to the driver’s existing rate. While the coverage would be the same as his or her current policy.
Aviva is Toronto-based, but plans to roll out coverage nationwide and says it’s in active discussions with regulators and members of government in Ontario, Alberta and Quebec as well as the Insurance Bureau of Canada. So it’s unclear at this point what impact this will have in Manitoba as MPI regulates our insurance in Manitoba.
