Is Winnipeg growing, or is it growing into two different cities? Old Winnipeg and New Winnipeg South.
At one time, Winnipeg was one of Canada’s largest cities. Today, we’re ranked 8th in population, behind Quebec City and just ahead of Hamilton. But now, the city forecast indicates our average annual population growth over the next 25 years will increase by 8,200 people per year, and by 2035 our metropolitan area population will exceed 1 million people.
With this growth comes a controversy over potential growth fees. City Hall has been looking at the idea of a growth fee and even hired a firm to study ways to craft it. The report is due later this month.
Mayor Brian Bowman stressed Winnipeg is falling behind on this matter.
But how often has Winnipeg done things like other cities? Maybe we could look at things differently. In a city that seems to be growing outward maybe we should grant more incentive to turn this growth upward.
