A day at the beach turned tragic this weekend after a 22-year-old man drowned.
Friends say Jean-Baptiste Ajua had just received his Canadian citizenship.
His body was pulled from the water Saturday afternoon.
The Lifesaving Society’s Carl Shier says Birds Hill doesn’t have lifeguards in the sense a pool does.
He says it’s impossible to patrol the large dark water like a small, clear pool.
“It’s not the same as lifeguarding at a pool. Quite different. Birds Hill is probably a facility that between the beach and the water is over 30 hectares. Although the people are trained as lifeguards, their role is as a beach safety officer,” he said.
Birds Hill has 44 beach safety officers in total, with 20 staffing peak beach-going times.
