A Manitoba RCMP officer who backed off from a high-speed pursuit, which ended in a fatal crash did nothing wrong.
That’s according to the Independent Investigation Unit.
Last October, a 20-year-old was driving home from Winnipeg, when she was hit by an alleged drunk driver, who was being chased by police on highway 2.
As required by The Police Services Act, the IIU must investigate because the incident involved a fatality, as well as serious injuries to occupants of the van.
After reviewing recordings from the police vehicle and video surveillance footage from a gas station in Ste. Claude where the pursuit began, it concluded the officer acted appropriately.
The investigator found the driver of the van was intent on fleeing from police and moved into oncoming traffic when it was unsafe to do so.
