Portage la Prairie is gearing up for its first Pride Parade on Saturday.
Mayor Irvin Ferris says the reaction he has heard has been overwhelmingly positive.
“There’s a whole bunch of benefits to a community when you become more inclusive and welcoming and caring. You attract people, so obviously your community grows in size, your likelihood of having businesses created, all those kind of things. But, at the end of the day, there’s one really important reason for doing it. It’s the right thing to do,” Ferris told 680 CJOB.
Ferris says he’s not concerned that local MLA Ian Wishart isn’t attending.
He said Wishart is away on vacation, but asked that a statement to be read on his behalf.
Ferris expects anywhere between 1,000 and 5,000 people to attend.
