WINNIPEG – Winnipeg Police did not have to go very far Friday afternoon to investigate a suspicious package that was found right outside their headquarters.
Someone spotted a bag at around 12 p.m. in a parking lot at the northwest corner of Garry Street and Graham Avenue.
An officer was notified who immediately determined there was something suspicious about the package.
Police immediately cleared the area and shutdown Garry south of Portage Avenue. Graham was also blocked from Fort Street to Smith Street.
Const. Jason Michalyshen tells 680 CJOB, they always respond to these situations with the utmost caution.
“We don’t take any chances when it comes to situations like this,” Michalyshen said. “Members of the Winnipeg Police Service did their part with respect to securing the scene; members of our bomb unit did their part with respect to examining that package.”
The Bomb Unit determined the package was not an explosive and roads were reopened at around 2:30 p.m.
Michalyshen says the investigation as to why it was left there is just beginning.
“Certainly if someone intentionally left that item with the purpose of causing a concern, there’s no question potentially criminal charges would be warranted,” he said.
