SWAN RIVER, MB – Manitoba’s police watchdog has cleared three RCMP officers of any wrongdoing following an arrest that resulted in a man suffering serious injuries.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has determined the officers used necessary force to protect themselves and the suspect as he was being taken into custody.
The incident happened on Dec. 1, 2015 in Swan River
The IIU says while officers struggled to handcuff the man, he attempted to grab one of the officer’s gun. They used force to restrain and control the man.
He was taken to a hospital and was diagnosed with an abdominal bleed from blunt force trauma, a bruised right eye and later a liver laceration injury.
Following an investigation, IIU Director Zane Tessler determined the arresting officers had sufficient grounds to make an arrest and that the force they employed was necessary.
The suspect was charged with two offences under the Criminal Code and one offence the Controlled Drug and Substances Act.
