WINNIPEG – After a summer of speculation, the Winnipeg Jets have named Blake Wheeler as their next captain.
Wheeler, and his wife Samantha, were showered with praise by GM Kevin Cheveldayoff and Head Coach Paul Maurice. The player for his on ice leadership and willingness to be the second captain of the Jets 2.0 era following Andrew Ladd’s departure last season. And his family for their commitment to Winnipeg.
“For me, this is obviously a huge honour,” said Wheeler on his 30th Birthday. “I’ve had a really distinct privilege of playing under two captains in my NHL career. Got to learn a lot from Andrew Ladd the last five years in Winnipeg. See what it looks like everyday to be the leader of a team, especially in a market like Winnipeg. Also got a chance to learn a lot from Zdeno Chara from my time in Boston.”
Mark Scheifele and Dustin Byfuglien will be alternate captains. All three players will be heading off to World Cup of Hockey Training Camps on the weekend along with Jacob Trouba, Connor Hellebucyk, Ondrej Pavelec, and Patrik Laine.
