WINNIPEG – The findings of a consultant report on growth fees in Winnipeg will be released today.
Last month, we learned that with the development fee, the cost of building a new home in Winnipeg could go up an extra $30,000.
That could also apply to commercial and residential builds.
Transcona councillor Russ Wyatt tells 680 CJOB that while a development fee might be a good idea, there hasn’t been nearly enough discussion within council or with the construction industry.
“The mayor is looking to rush this policy through to the floor of council in order to avoid having to raise property taxes more than he thinks he needs to or find savings in the budget,” he said,
The money from a development fee would be used to pay for new infrastructure in new neighbourhoods.
The Home Builders’ Association worries the new fee will scare off potential new home buyers and lead to a decline in construction.
