Winnipeg – The U of M Bisons did not kick off their Canada West Conference Football season the way they had intended, losing 23-14 to the University of Calgary Dinosaurs on Thursday Night at Investors Group Field.
The defenses dominated the first half, with the visitors up 5-4. The Bisons finally found the end zone early in the third quarter on a six yard pass from Theo Deezar to Jesse Walker to go in front 11-5. But Calgary eventually regained the lead for good with about 5 minutes remaining in the quarter, capping off a seven play, 50 yard drive on a one yard plunge by Quarterback Jimmy Underdahl.
The Bisons Deezar completed 23 of 29 passes for 278 yards and one touchdown, but was also picked off three times. Walker finished the night with 8 catchers for 73 yards while first year receiver Riley Harrison had 7 receptions for 103 yards. Individually,
Underdahl was 21 of 34 on the night for 242 yards, and a touchdown along with that third quarter one yard plunge for the go ahead major.
The #7 ranked Dinos finished the night with 424 yards offense compared to just 348 for the U of M, who went into the game as the #5 team in the first CIS Top Ten Football poll of 2016.
The U of M are back in action Thursday of next week when they travel to Regina while Calgary hosts UBC on Friday.
