WINNIPEG – The Goldeyes can taste it now.
With just two games left in the season, one more win or a loss by Laredo and Winnipeg will be playoff bound.
They took a huge and improbable step with an 8-6, rain-shortened win over Fargo-Moorhead Saturday night at Shaw Park, in a game that the Goldeyes once trailed 6-0.
They faced that deficit heading into the bottom of the fifth, when an Adam Heisler homer brought them within four. A few hits later and the score was 6-3.
The Goldeyes tied it in the sixth on a walk, a double and two singles. The winning run was scored on a safety squeeze in the bottom of the seventh.
After the RedHawks batted in the top of the eighth, the rain came and it came hard, forcing the game to be called.
Laredo lost to Wichita Saturday, meaning the Goldeyes will capture the wild card in the American Association with one win in their final two games or if Laredo loses one of its final two games.
The Goldeyes can no longer win the North Division: St. Paul clinched the title with a 1-0 win over Lincoln.
The first chance to clinch a playoff berth comes at 1:05 this afternoon at Shaw Park.
