WINNIPEG – A man who was once an RCMP officer is now facing sexual exploitation charges.
Police say the man, who was 31 at the time, met an underage girl while on duty in April 2014.
The two got into an intimate relationship, which lasted until August of 2014. The girl’s family then told Winnipeg Police about it.
The Professional Standards Unit got involved and after a lengthy investigation, determined there were grounds for charges to be laid.
Yesterday the now 33-year-old man turned himself into police. His name will not be released to ensure the identity of the victim is protected.
“The charge specifically identifies the accused as a person in authority, someone who is obviously in a position of trust and authority,” says Winnipeg Police Constable Jason Michalyshen. “It identifies him as someone who engaged in a relationship, certainly sexual in nature, with someone under 18 years of age.”
The accused was a member of the RCMP for six years before resigning this past May.
