Winnipeg – The American Association best of five semifinal playoff between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and St. Paul Saints is going to a 5th and deciding game Monday Night at CHS Field.
Winnipeg Shortstop Maikol Gonzalez drew a 2 out, bases loaded walk in the top of the ninth inning on Sunday Night to force in what turned out to be the decisive run in a 5-4 Goldeyes victory.
“Sometimes (walks) make a big difference,” Goldeyes manager Rick Forney said in a club news release. “I can’t think of a better time to work a walk. Great, patient at-bat. It was a tough situation … so Maikol did a good job.”
After giving up a first inning run, the Fish struck for four runs in the fourth inning. But the Saints, who out hit Winnipeg 12-7, came back and tied the game with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Setting the table for Maikol’s series extending walk.
Mikey O’Brien and Mark Hamburger, both brilliant in St. Paul’s series opening 1-0 win in Game One last Thursday at Shaw Park, will start for their respective teams at 7:05 p.m. tonight.
The winner will advance to the league final against Wichita after the Wingnuts eliminated Sioux City 10-5 on Sunday in the other semifinal.
