WINNIPEG – Recycling has been around for decades but there’s still be a lot of confusion over what can and cannot be recycled.
Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba’s Karen Melnychuk tells 680 CJOB styrofoam, for example, is one thing they find in a lot of blue bins that shouldn’t be there.
“It is recyclable in other provinces but not here in Manitoba,” says Melnychuck. “It’s such a light product and it takes so much room to store. There’s no end market yet for it here that’s easily accessible for Manitobans and the recycling facilities that we have.”
She says some retailers will take back packaging materials like styrofoam.
Melnychuk also points out that plastic bags cannot go in the blue bin but can usually be recycled by taking them back to where you got them or to Winnipeg Harvest.
