Winnipeg – The Winnipeg Jets extended their NHL Pre-season winning streak to 4 games, and rookie Kyle Connor scored his 3rd goal in as many games, in a 4-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators Monday Night at MTS Centre.
Connor scored the game winner nearing the mid way mark of the third period on a Winnipeg power play as the Jets improved to 4-1 by overcoming a pair of one goal deficits.
The other story lines from Monday Night included a productive first game together for the #1 line of Schiefle-Wheeler- and Ehlers as each member of that top unit had a goal. Winnipeg’s netminding continued to be a major strength with Michael Hutchinson making 27 saves. During the winning streak, Hutchinson- Connor Hellebuyck- and Ondrej Pavelec have combined to stop 118 of 122 shots for an impressive .967 saves percentage.
Forward Drew Stafford was shaken up during the first period when he struck his head against the boards after a collision with Ottawa’s Mike Blunden. Stafford did not return and no update on his injury was provided after the game.
The Jets camp roster currently sits at 40- consisting of 4 goalies, 13 defencemen, and 23 forwards heading into the final two games of the exhibition schedule in Edmonton and Minnesota Thursday and Saturday.
After Monday’s game, Head Coach Paul Maurice said a “manageable” number would be 28-30 healthy players so expect some decisions within the next 12-24 hours. The team has to be down to a 23 man roster ahead of next Thursday’s regular season and home opener vs Carolina.
