WINNIPEG – Winnipeg Police believe drugs may have been involved in the deaths of two men, whose bodies were found in a parked car in the North End.
The pair were found by a passerby late Monday morning in a car parked near an elementary school on College Avenue just west of Main Street.
Investigators think they were likely in the car for several days.
Constable Jason Michalyshen said the men were 27 and 35 years old. He adds drugs or even some drug paraphernalia were found in the car.
Michalyshen said police cannot confirm the cause of death, as they’re still waiting on results from autopsies. However, he did say police are looking into the possibility of a connection to fentanyl or carfentanil.
“We all know both of those drugs are on the back of our minds and very present in our community,” Michalyshen said. “We are absolutely looking into that possibility, to ignore that possibility in light of what we know – it would unheard of for us to think otherwise.”
A toxicology report could take several weeks.
Police said they handled the case as discreetly as possible because the car was parked near Machray Elementary School.
“We really had to carefully assess what we were dealing with, certainly a unique circumstance,” Michalyshen said. “This a residential neighbourhood, there’s a school close by, we have the potential risks.”
