Winnipeg – The Winnipeg Jets run of 4 straight exhibition wins came to an end with a 5-2 loss in Edmonton Thursday Night. Allowing a pair of shorthanded goals just 61 seconds apart early in the third period proved to be the Jets undoing.
Connor McDavid’s second goal of the night at 3:51 of the final frame, followed by Mark Letestu finding the net at 4:52 on the same Winnipeg powerplay completely altered what had been a 2-1 game at that point.
McDavid, playing his first game as the Oilers Captain, also opened the scoring barely 5 minutes into the first period on an Edmonton powerplay. Winnipeg’s Brandon Tanev continued his fine pre season showing by cutting the Oilers lead to 2-1 midway through the game.
Bryan Little scored in garbage time for the 4-2 Jets who finish up their seven game pre-season schedule Saturday Night in Minnesota.
After that, decisions will have to be made on the final player cuts to get down to a 23 man roster by 4 p.m. CDT on Tuesday for the start of the regular season next Thursday vs the Carolina Hurricanes. Winnipeg is currently sitting at 32 players, although Drew Stafford, Shawn Matthias, and Brendan Lemieux are injured and may not be ready to go for next week.
