WINNIPEG – RCMP have two words for people heading out on the roads for Thanksgiving: drive safe.
They’ll be out in full force this weekend as part of Operation Impact, a national initiative where they target impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding and not wearing a seatbelt.
Ed Moreland is head of traffic services with Manitoba RCMP and he tells 680 CJOB too many lives have been lost on our roads.
“Personally, I want people to drive like they want to get home and have dinner with their family,” says Moreland. “At the end of the day, it’s very easy to get complacent and in my line of work, complacency kills and it’s the same behind the wheel.”
Moreland isn’t a fan of using the word “accident” as he says a collision is almost always driver error.
So far, 80 people have died on Manitoba highways in 2016, compared to 50 at this time in 2015.
