WINNIPEG – Winnipeg residents living in suburban areas of the city may soon be able to take up beekeeping on their property.
On Tuesday, a committee at City Hall will look into whether beekeeping should be allowed across the city.
Currently, the city allows urban beehives in parts of downtown Winnipeg, such as The Fairmont, The Forks and the University of Winnipeg.
Bee populations are declining throughout the world due to a variety of factors, including: neonicotinoid pesticides, loss of habitat and varroa mites.
The report recommends allowing city-wide beekeeping for the purpose of “restoring and enhancing the bee population.”
