WINNIPEG – The Bear Clan Patrol and Winnipeg Police are joining forces to patrol the North End.
Four officers and members of the volunteer group spent a few hours on Selkirk Avenue Wednesday night.
Bear Clan co-founder James Favel says there may have been some awkwardness with police at first, but things have been smoothed out.
“That’s absolutely beneficial to everybody in the community, absolutely. We’re acting as a liaison between the community and the officers here. We’re trying to make everybody’s life a little bit easier, make sure everybody gets along a little better. If we can do that in three hours on a Wednesday night, then bring it on.”
Constable Jeff Boehm says building a relationship is vital.
“The reputation that the Bear Clan has in this community is unmatched by anybody, I think, in this province. To have us be able to join them is a great commitment to the community for us. Joining in a collaborative effort with them only enhances our visibility.”
Favel adds that since the reincarnation of the Bear Clan Patrol, there was some awkwardness between them and the police at first but that has been completely smoothed out.
