WINNIPEG – The Progressive Conservatives have introduced a bill they say will strengthen policies against sexual violence on post-secondary schools in Manitoba.
This comes days after they voted down an NDP bill with a similar mandate.
As the bill was shot down, a few NDP MLAs shouted “shame” at the Tories although three MLAs apologized yesterday.
The new legislation proposes that all post-secondary campuses ensure that students are protected from sexual violence and if sexual assault happens, they must respond appropriately.
The bill would also include a definition of sexual violence and proposes that social media be taken into account when dealing with harassment.
Post-secondary institutions would be required to report on their efforts to raise awareness and spread the word on services offered to victims of sexual violence and harassment.
