WINNIPEG – Contract negotiations will soon begin in earnest between the city and four of its unions.
Police officers, senior police staff, firefighters and CUPE members are all nearing the end of their collective agreements.
Mayor Brian Bowman tells 680 CJOB there have already been some preliminary discussions but that’ll pick up soon.
Bowman will be looking to save us all some money and not just with union contracts but with pensions too.
“Pensions are a big [issue] in terms of cost,” says Bowman. “Of course, that’s not collective agreements but some of our pensions are not sustainable. They have to be dealt with and in my view, politicians have put off those difficult issues for far too long.”
Bowman says previous administrations have failed to deal with pensions and that has to change now.
