WINNIPEG – November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and The Canadian Diabetes Association is taking the opportunity to drive diabetes awareness, as the disease has reached epidemic proportions in Canada.
Today, about 373 thousand Manitobans are living with diabetes, in the next decade it’s projected to increase by 37 percent.
C-E-O of the Canadian Diabetes Association Rick Blickstead tells 680 CJOB, this is a crisis throughout Manitoba.
“Our First Nations across this county are highly susceptible to diabetes. In some cases on reserves, fifty percent of young children will have diabetes by the time they are twenty years old.”
Diabetes puts people at higher risk of serious and costly complications.
Sixty percent of Manitobans are overweight or obese, which puts them at a higher risk for type 2 diabetes.
