WINNIPEG – The annual Association of Manitoba Municipalities Convention kicks off today in Winnipeg.
Roughly 900 delegates will be at the Convention Centre over the next three days.
Their theme this year is New Partnerships, New Possibilities.
“We’ll be talking about partnerships with other level of government and also at regulation and how that affects municipalities,” explains AMM president and Steinbach Mayor Chris Goertzen. “So we have great opportunity to lobby the provincial government to make sure that they see us as a partner.”
Goertzen’s comments came ahead of today’s throne speech, and it was clear that Goertzen wants more support financially for the municipalities.
“Municipalities, on average, have 60 per cent of the public infrastructure, yet we only take in eight cents of every tax dollar to work on that infrastructure. That’s a real challenge for us. Everyone of us needs a partnership with the other orders of government.”
This is their 18th annual convention, which flips every year between Brandon and Winnipeg.
