Winnipeg – The U of M Bisons became the first repeat champion of the Wesmen Classic Basketball Tournament in 22 years, defeating Alberta 86-78 on Friday Night at the U of Winnipeg’s Duckworth Centre.
The Golden Bears went into the 50th edition of the Tournament undefeated in Canada West Conference play with a 10-0 record while the Bisons were 11th at 4-6. But Manitoba used a balanced offensive attack, and 9/17 shooting from outside the three point line to pull off the upset win.
Fourth Year Guard Justus Alleyn led all players with 22 points while Tournament All Star Brody Clarke had 21 points and 9 rebounds for Alberta. The U of M’s Keith Omoerah had 12 rebounds in the game and set a Classic Record with 45 for the tourney.
The host Winnipeg Wesmen edged Victoria 64-63 in the University third place game while Lakehead of Thunder Bay routed Regina 89-56 in the consolation final.
The Sisler Spartans won the Boys High School Title, their first since 1994, by defeating Dakota 74-61. Tournament MVP Don Dayrit scored 15 of his 28 points from beyond the arc to set the pace offensively for Sisler.
Third place went to Garden City who were 67-64 winners over defending champion John Taylor.
