TAMPA, Fla. – It was arguably the best 2nd period we’ve seen all season from these Winnipeg Jets.
To top it all off it was an exciting game, and a much needed bounce back from a disappointing New Years Eve loss to the New York Islanders as the Jets kicked off a short road trip with a 6-4 Victory over the Tamapa Bay Lightning.
The Jets opened the scoring seven minutes into the first period as Mark Schiefele wired his 16th goal of the season, with assists coming from Patrik Laine and Toby Enstrom. The Jets escaped the 1st period without conceding any goals after being outshot 17-6
The second started on a sour note as Matthew Pecca got the Bolts on the board with his first goal of his carrer, but from there on out it was all Jets.
Nikolaj Ehlers was tripped up on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot, where he capitalized for his 11th of the year, to put the Jets up 2-1. Defencemen Jacob Trouba and Dustin Byfuglien would also net goals before the buzzer to extend the Jets lead to 4-1
The Lightning opened the scoring in the third when Ondrej Palat got a goal past Connor Hellebuyck. However, Ehlers quickly responded for his second of the game, to keep the Jets in front 5-2
Penalties continued to hurt the Jets, as the Lightning capitalized on two power-plays late in the third to cut into the Jets lead, but Patrik Laine sealed the deal with an empty netter, and his 20th of the season, to give the Jets the decision 6-4
The Jets won’t have to travel far for their next game as they’ll stay in the Sunsine State to take on the Florida Panther Wednesday.
