It was a close call for kids skating at the local rink in Kelwood, MB when its roof collapsed just after the doors were closed for the day.
The 50-year-old arena caved in on January 14th and snow piling up on the roof is being labelled as the cause.
“They were discussing getting it shoveled off and it went down,” said councillor for Kelwood in the RM of Rosewood, Duane Stewart.
He said there was about two feet of snow on the roof when it collapsed, but thankfully no one was inside as the last skate had finished an hour prior.
“They got quotes on cleanup and they were presented to the adjuster yesterday,” Stewart said and mentioned he expects the entire cost to be upwards of $400,000.
Kelwood is a tiny community about 30 minutes north of Neepawa and Stewart believes this will hurt the local economy and their legion.
“It does rely on club room business to stay afloat,” he said and added that a hockey tournament, which usually brings in $3 or 4 thousand had to be called off over the weekend.
