Winnipeg – The Winnipeg Goldeyes have been busily reassembling their Championship Squad for the coming season. And on Wednesday, Manager Rick Forney landed one of the biggest contributors from 2016 by signing veteran Centerfielder Reggie Abercrombie for a 4th season.
“I’m very pleased to have Reggie back,” said Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney in a team news release. “He is a good veteran not only in terms of on-field production, but his clubhouse leadership is impeccable as well.”
Abercrombie had a season to remember in 2016. The former LA Dodger draft pick, and Florida Marlin hit .297 with 20 Homeruns, 68 RBI, 71 runs scored, and 21 stolen bases in 95 regular season games.
It’s the second time in seven American Association seasons Abercrombie has put together a 20-20 season in homeruns and steals.
A major highlight came on July 14th at SHAW Park in a game against the Sioux City Explorers. Reggie went yard twice for the 87th and 88th round trippers of his AA career to become the all time leader in that category. His first 4 bagger of the coming season will extend that record to the century mark as he finished 2016 with 99.
But the best was saved for last, when Abercrombie homered twice and drove in a franchise playoff record 7 runs in Game Five of the Championship Series at Wichita. Which the Goldeyes won in a romp by an 11-4 margin over the Wingnuts.
Reggie Abercombie is the 12th player to be signed by the Goldeyes for 2017. That list also includes All Star David Rohm, Canadian 3B Wes Darvill, and pitchers Edwin Carl, Kevin McGovern, Cameron McVey, and Duke von Schamann.
