WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will kick off their upcoming CFL season in Regina to open the new stadium for the arch rival Saskatchewan Roughriders.
The Bombers will be at the new Mosaic Stadium on Canada Day for an 8 p.m. kickoff. That’s actually week two of the regular season schedule. The blue and gold have the bye in week one.
“To kick off the season after having a Bye Week, then being on the road, and obviously a special game on July 1st with Saskatchewan opening their new stadium. We’ll look forward to spoiling that new stadium for them and start a winning tradition,” Winnipeg Football Club President and CEO Wade Miller told 680 CJOB.
The home opener at Investors Group Field will be on Friday July 7th against the Calgary Stampeders. That game kicks off at 7.30.
The Bombers will host Drew Willy and the Toronto Argonauts in Week 4 on Thursday, July 13th. All four of Winnipeg’s home games during the summer months of July and August will be played on Thursday or Friday Nights. There will also be a couple of Friday Night and three Saturday Afternoon games in the fall, including the Annual Banjo Bowl grudge match with Saskatchewan on September 9th.
“I’m fairly happy with it,” said Miller in referring to the schedule. “We play in the summer on Thursday and Friday Nights which is great. In the fall we have a couple of Friday Night games at 7:30 p.m. which is a good time for our fans. And then when it gets a little chillier out, we have a couple of Saturday Afternoon games. The last two are against BC so you’re going to see some fierce competition for sure. It’s a pretty balanced schedule for the most part.”
