WINNIPEG – The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is looking into the death of a man while he was in the custody of Winnipeg Police.
Officers responded to a disturbance at a house in Garden City on Sunday night after a man indicated he wanted another male removed from the premises.
A struggle ensued while police were trying to detain the man.
Officers contacted paramedics to transport the man to Seven Oaks Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The province’s police watchdog has now taken over the investigation since the incident involved a fatality.
The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty.
