Winnipeg Jets defenceman Jacob Trouba will will miss the next two games, after the NHL has decided to serve him with a two game suspension.
The decision stems from Sunday’s game at Ottawa, where Trouba checked the Senators’ forward Mark Stone with an illegal open-ice elbow to the head.
The incident happened with 13 minutes remaining in the third period.
Trouba was given a minor penalty. Stone did not return to the game, after receiving the hit.
As part of the punishment, Trouba will also miss out on more than $33,000 USD of his salary.
The first-time offender will be eligible to hit the ice again on March 3, when Winnipeg hosts St. Louis.
Winnipeg took a 3-2 victory over Ottawa at Saturday’s game.
