Winnipeg – The Winnipeg Jets were in on today’s NHL Trading Deadline- as they have sent pending unrestricted forward Drew Stafford to the Boston Bruins for a conditional 6th round draft pick in 2018. Stafford, in the final year of a 4.35 million dollar deal, had slipped to the Jets 4th line and had just 4 goals and 13 points in 40 games.
And while the 31 year old forward from Milwaukee, Wisconsin spoke of the stress and family issues involved with a trade- he’s excited to about going to Boston. “It’s a great opportunity to get in the mix,” is how the former Buffalo Sabre and University of North Dakota product reacted to the deal. “It’s very similar to when I got moved here. To a team that’s right in the hunt. That’s why we play, to play in the playoffs. I couldn’t be happier.”
And it’s not like Stafford couldn’t wait to get out of Winnipeg. But he acknowledged how this season has gone for him, including a series of injuries that sidelined him for 24 games. And he also spoke of what will be a lasting memory of his two plus years in the Peg. “The White Out. Playoffs. That was probably the coolest thing,” Stafford recounted from the spring of 2015. “Especially in warm-up. And it’s all white. Sold out for warm up. That was awesome.”
Chris Thorburn, Ondrej Pavelec, and Paul Postma are also in the final year of their contracts, but will finish the season with the Jets.
Jets General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff says he will rely on some youngsters to fill the hole Stafford leaves… sepcificaly: Andrew Copp and Marko Dano
“Drew is not a bottom 6 type of player. If there’s not an opportunity for him to play in the top six, giving Ehlers and Laine’s bursting on to the scene, There’s an opportunity to get Copp and Dano back in the lineup and get them playing again.”
