WINNIPEG – The province is still using public awareness as its main tool in the fight against zebra mussels.
No tickets were handed out last summer even though the province begged people to scrape the mussels off their boats after taking them out of the water.
They checked thousands of boats at checkstops, but left people with warnings instead of fines.
This year, another awareness campaign and no word about getting tough with those who are actually in danger of spreading the problem.
The mussels are already in the Red River, Lake Winnipeg and Cedar Lake.
